WHAT IS CUTTING STEEL?

Free cutting steels are steels with low machining costs, as the chips are usually broken in the rapid chip removal process. Due to their easy machinability properties, these steels are defined as the most suitable steels for stone removal operations such as longitudinal and face turning, thread cutting, drilling with drills, reaming in multi-spindle or revolver lathes.

CLASSIFICATION OF FREE CUTTING STEELS

According to the heat treatment applied to free cutting steels,

* Non-heat treated (soft free cutting steels)

 * Heat treated ones

* Those who have undergone breeding

* They are divided into two main groups, those that undergo cementation process.

PROCESSES APPLIED TO FREE CUTTING STEELS

- Since the surfaces that do not require machining should be within precise measurement tolerances, free-cutting steels are mostly used as cold drawn.

- By the way, steels containing about 0.120% sulfur and low carbon, called semi-automatic steel, are used in the manufacture of hot and cold forging and punching parts, as well as good machinability. (example: nuts) 9SMn28 quality containing high sulfur is used successfully in hot forging application.

- By the way, in recent years, various pipes have been started to be produced by pressing and extrusion of semi-boiling automat steels. This type of application also brings about a reduction in machining costs and material savings to a large extent.
